Winter Rose Patricia A McKillip Books

“I walked through a storm and fell asleep in an empty house; when I woke there was a dead man beside me…”

Two sisters are preparing for harvest to end and winter to arrive, one is engaged to a farmer, and one is as wild as the autumn winds and her namesake, Rois (Rose). Their lives are changed when a blond stranger named Corbet appears to reclaim his family’s old house, now in great disrepair. His father had abandoned it many years ago, as most in the village believe, after killing his own father, Corbet’s grandfather.

Corbet enlists the help of some men of the village to repair only a few of the rooms, before he disappears as well, but not after he has enjoyed many nights at dinner with the two sisters, leaving with both their hearts, trapped between worlds only one girl can find.

Rois will face an ancient, powerful magic, “the dead of winter”, that few have seen and lived, to save the one she truly sees and knows, as no other can.

For anyone who has ever pined over love lost, or searched for magic in the snow or autumn winds or in a deep well, The Winter Rose is a poetically-written, tragic, romantic fantasy that will enthrall and warm you through the long winter.

Winter Rose Patricia A McKillip Books Reviews

It is hard to describe a Patricia McKilip book her prose has carefully chosen groups of words that are lyrical and evoke such beautiful images. I bought this book when it first appeared in paperback, and since then I have been searching for the half sized hardback copy. Finally found one here at and I was lucky to receive a very nice copy.
The story will grab you from the first page and will keep you to the end, wanting more. It is well worth the price you can afford.
Patricia McKillip brings new meaning to the term "fantasy fiction", by crafting a beautiful, dreamlike novel about love, and a young woman's awakening to the man she loves and her own identity. This book could have been trite and ordinary--instead, it's a masterpiece.
Wild Rois, the second daughter of a prosperous farmer, lives with her father and soon-to-be-married sister, Laurel. Rois roams the fields and woods, while Laurel is a sedate homebody. But everything is changed when a young man, Corbet, moves in nearby. Corbet's grandfather was killed in the near area by his father, and reportedly there is a curse on them all. Rois becomes fascinated by Corbet and the reported curse, digging deeper and deeper into realms where mortals aren't meant to go.
She investigates into the decrepit manor where Corbet lives, and encounters both the living and the dead, sucked into an otherworld where an icy woman wants Corbet. Neither Rois nor the reader will really be able to rest until Corbet is freed from the curse -- even as we learn what makes Rois so different from the people around her.
Rois is a unique character, and her attempts to free Corbet had me cheering, especially as I wanted Perrin and Laurel to get back together. The love triangle is saved from triteness, with Laurel pining after Corbet and Perrin irritated that his ex-fiancee is flinging herself at a cursed, mysterious stranger. Despite this fact (and the fact that we know that brooding Corbet and otherworldly Rois are better suited), Laurel is not annoying, and the reader becomes genuinely concerned when she becomes "ill." The nature of this illness is strange as well, sort of losing one's taste for the real world and slowly drifting out of life.
The stories of the curse and what happened those years ago becomes so twined with Rois's investigations on herself and her family. It has the trappings of a very ordinary book, but the dream/reality blurring make it very UNordinary. In fact, at times it's difficult to tell just what's happening. I had to read the end several times over to fully pull in what was going on.
The writing is, as always, dreamy and gorgeous. I did feel that this novel wasn't quite as tight as "Song for the Basilisk" where it's dreamy reality, rather than dreamy reality/dreamy dream, which this novel qualifies as.
If you are a big fan of sword-and-sorcery fantasy, you probably won't like this book. If you're in the mood for a tale as haunting as the cover, full of subtle magic and mystery, then please rush out to buy.
McKillip does it again! Another story that warrants re-reading over and over! I love the richly woven tapestry of the stories she writes, and this one did NOT disappoint! Wonder and enchantment is saturated in every chapter of this riveting, cannot-put-down tale about a girl who is unlike any other and captures the hearts of readers as she bravely follows along dancing to drums only she can hear to unravel the mysteries and find herself. Excellent tale with old-fashioned true storytelling at it's finest!
This is an example of Patricia McKillip at the top of her game. As usual, the reader can expect exquisite descriptions and a fairy-tale-flavored plot. But with Winter Rose, McKillip elevates these to an almost flawless level. Instead of feeling vague and underdeveloped, (as some of her lesser books do), this one is rich, vivid, and compelling.

I realize, (from looking at other reviews), that not everyone experienced the same connection to this story. That seems to be the way with McKillip's writing. Certain works speak to certain people, and other works speak to different people. My response can vary from reading to reading, one decade to another. However, Winter Rose remains consistently high on my list of McKillip's best. Perhaps this is because it emphasizes elements that resonate with me...the beauty and magic of the natural world, as well as the healing power of a loving family.

I became deeply invested in the characters' journeys and didn't find the fae/dream magic to be confusing. Although the pacing felt a little slow at times, this echoed the plot, with the closing in of winter, and the patience required to abide until spring's return.
